Karen and I enjoyed a quiet drink together last weekend to toast Nan and reminisce about our special time spent with her over the years. Before we moved to Australia and before kids came along, visits with Nan in Toronto usually involved taking her out for drinks and dinner. One visit in 2004 or 2005 we took Nan out for dinner to a little Italian restaurant near Bloor and Royal York. We kicked off the evening with vodka martinis: Nan had two! We had a wonderful visit with Nan, and she regaled us with hilarious wartime stories. When Maia and Eden came along, although we lived on the other side of the world for a time, she doted on the girls and they shared our love for our "glam Nan". Our visits with Nan were special, and always left us with a feeling of closeness and belonging. You will be sorely missed, dear Nanna. Love Sean, Karen, Maia and Eden

I send my deepest condolences to family and beloved of Doreen ❤ And thank you for the beautiful ceremonial service - I was thrilled to hear about her dancing past. Nan truly was a remarkable lady. I was honored to meet her several times through Bev and Paul. Doreen made a difference. Love, Tanja Railo from Finland

A Prayer for the Dead - H. Byron Ballard (2020)

You have come to the end of this pathway
In a journey to which we bear witness.
You have come to the end of a pathway
That is barred with a gate and a door.
May this door open swiftly and silently.
May this gate give you a moment’s grace
In which to rest your spirit before you venture through.
We stand here with you, as your companions,
As your family, for you are beloved.
But, for now, we must remain here.
We can not go with you to this old land.
Not yet.
For you will see the Ancestors.
You will see the Beloved Dead.
You will walk among the Divine Beings
That guide and nurture us all.
You go to dwell in the lands
Of summer and of apples where we dance forever youthful, forever free.
We can hear the music in the mist
The drums that echo our sad hearts.
We can see your bright eyes and your smile.
And so we open the gate.
We push back the door.
We hold the gate open.
We glance through the doorway,
And with love and grief and wonder
We watch you walk through.
Hail the Traveler!
All those remembered in love, in honor,
Live on.
Farewell, o best loved,
O fairest,
Farewell.
Love you Nanna,
💗 ShanEda
