THOONEN, Henry F. - It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Henry F. Thoonen of Kitchener. Beloved brother of Rosemary (Gene) of Connecticut, Ed (Kathy) of Ilderton and Fred (Lori) of Guelph. Proud uncle of Anna Dubowchik. Son of the late Henry (2005) and Elsie (2018) Thoonen of Blenheim, Ontario. Special friend of Heidi and Holly.

Henry was a retired teacher from the Waterloo Catholic District School Board who had a great passion for teaching. He had a life-long love of art and music and played several instruments. For many years, he was active in the Scouting movement. He enjoyed traveling to see historical and geographical sites and had a keen interest in nature, especially bird watching.

Thank you to the frontline responders and Gilbert MacIntyre and Son for their care and compassion.

Donations to the Waterloo Wellington Canadian Mental Health Association (, Kitchener Public Library (, Birds Canada ( or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Online donations and condolences can be made at

To the Thoonen Family,
I only taught with Henry for one year, but we immediately found common ground in History. We shared many conversations before or after school, talking about the upcoming trip with his Mom to France, the details of Dieppe and after the photos- so many photos. He also enjoyed correcting my mispronunciation of English words and sharing his passion for the Nifty-Fifty Words.
I will always remember him as a kind and very intelligent man who often enjoyed a cup of tea with me. So sorry for your loss.

It has been a week since that phone call. There is an empty space, no more crossword puzzles to save, no more friendly bantering, no more popping over, no more stories, no more of anything, just the silence. RIP my friend.

We are sadden to learn of Henry's passing. I am having many memorable thoughts of activities with the Henry and the family. One most recently of helping Henry in his research of the family's history through our contact with the Blenheim Historical Society. Our deepest sympathy to all of Henry's siblings.
