Jessie Irene Andersen (nee Merriam)

May 15, 1920 – January 11, 2019

Wow, what a woman!!! In her 99th year!

Born on a farm just outside Chatsworth, ON, Jessie knew the meaning of hard work. She adored her lamb Sparky and adhered to a strictly no-lamb diet after farm life. A woman who boarded with them taught Jessie to knit and sew and she never looked back. She moved to Guelph at 16 and started her career as a master seamstress at Duncan McPhee. She lost her fiancé in the Second World War but found love later in life and married at 49, on April 22, 1967 to Gordon Oscar Andersen, more affectionately known as Gord. (February 12, 1921 – August 28, 1998)

They moved to Winnipeg after their marriage and then to Oshawa and upon retirement, Jessie and Gord moved to Kincardine, ON and built their dream home. Jessie continued her passion for creating beautiful sweaters, socks, etc. for the Philosopher’s Wool Company. She was a perfectionist in her sewing abilities and was very intolerant of imperfections. Her workmanship was legendary!
Jessie and Gord moved to Guelph in the late 90’s and in 2011 moved in with Mike Heeg and family to live beside the stone house she had once lived in with her mother. Talk about coming full circle!

She was a very kind and warm hearted gentle soul, with a quick laugh and kind words. She never spoke ill of anyone or was judgemental. She was interested in everyone and what was going on in their lives. If you spent time with her, you were very lucky if she bestowed a pair of her coveted socks on you.

She was predeceased by her brother Les Merriam (Nell), and sisters Doris Heeg (Jack), and Bettie Beattie (Ralph). She touched the lives of her step-children Brenda, Taryl and Brian Andersen. She is fondly and lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews: Delores Pennock, Robert Merriam (Gwen), Dianne Faloon (Robert), Anita Merriam, Suzanne Chambers (Fred), David Beattie (Cathy), Barb Dempsey (Tom), Meri Beattie (Rob), Mary Evans (Michael), and Michael Heeg (Claire Breakey). She loved her great nieces and nephews: Jennifer Titley (Kevin), Jeffrey Pennock (deceased), Richard Faloon (deceased), Randy Faloon (Mariola), Lianna Hansen (Rick) Stephen Merriam, Greg Barrington (Myrna), Cheryl Duffey (Greg), Valerie Barrington, Leslie Merriam, Stefani Hurley (Glenn), Kym Muller (Marcel), Sarah Pilskalnietis (Mark), Caroline, Patricia and Lindsay Beattie, Jamie Chambers (Alice), Shannon Taggart (Rick), Nita Heeg (Craig Sumpter) and Joseph Heeg (Daniel Egli), Bronwen Sentamu (Obeid). Her legacy continues on with her great great nieces and nephews: Braeden Hurley (Amy), Hunter and Remington Zinck, Kathleen Pennock, Shawn and Kylee McGee, Sarah Harpell, William and Matthew Pilskalnietis, Dan, Caitlin and Susanne Chambers and Justin, Ryan and Kristy Taggart. And her great great great nieces and nephews: Brody and Claire Hurley, Nicole, Anya and Aga Faloon, Anali and Alian Hansen. Special friends Bev Anderson, Willa and Chloe Breakey, Judy and Alex Millar, Michael and Julie McDermott and Deb Devisscher remember her with love and affection.
