Obituary

HERSEY, Lillian Amanda, passed away suddenly at Guelph General Hospital on Thursday, June 3rd, 2021.

Lillian was born on September 13, 1924, in Summerside, P.E.I. to Albert and Josephine Clow. She was the 10th of 11 children: Robert, Victor, Edward, Kay, Margaret, Ralph, Allan, Doris, Susie, and is survived by her older brother, Edwin.

Lillian was the beloved wife of the late Frank Hersey; the loving mother of David (Betsy), Audrey, John, Judy (the late Stewart), and Keith (Cathy); the very proud grandmother of Donna, Christopher (Jenn), Erica (Mike), Michael (Alison), Jeremy, Kyle, and Keiren; and great-grandmother of Holly, John, Chiara, Carson, Cash, Mason, Maisy, Madden and Sage. She was Aunt Lil to many east and west coast nieces and nephews.

Lillian’s enthusiasm and love of life were contagious. She had a positive word for everyone she met, encouraged others through her own example, and had a wonderful sense of humour. She had an eye for fairness, equality, and respect. When needed, she stood her ground and spoke up for herself and for others. Living independently at the age of 96 years, Lillian maintained a sharp wit and continued to enjoy outdoor walks, crocheting, knitting, reading on her Kindle, and watching the Toronto Blue Jays. She was particularly fond of lively conversation with family and friends. Lillian enjoyed the many friendships she made at Silver Brook Condominiums over the past 33 years.

Resting at the Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home, Dublin Chapel, 252 Dublin St. N., Guelph, where a private family service will be held in the chapel on Monday, June 7, 2021 at 11 a.m. The service will be available to watch through ZOOM through the link on the funeral home website. It is with sadness that we say farewell to Lillian. We live at Silverbrooke Towers and have only known her these past few years. She is a light that always shone in our community gatherings. Many miss her and mourn with you.

I remember I was in kindergarten when my grandma (Kay Rogerson) picked me up from school. There was a lovely lady in her car that shared the same hair, eyes, soft voice, and nurturing smile. It was the day I met my Great Aunt Lil.
We had to go grocery shopping at Safeway before we headed to Grandma’s house. As we parked, I remember this gentle hand sliding a $2 bill towards me (in 1988, that was a lot of money!) and said “get yourself some candy.” I asked her why. Her reply was, “...because I’m your Great Aunt Lil, and I’m great!” I learnt so much that day about our large family that spread from coast to coast
I’ll always remember when Aunt Lil, and Aunt Doris came to Grandmas at the same time. I can close my eyes and see the three of them sitting on the sun deck swing sipping white wine and getting the giggles.
When I was 20, I had the pleasure of travelling from Ladysmith to P.E.I. with my Mom, Karen. Meeting so many lovely family members.
When my partner came into the family, and we decided to foster his nephews, Aunt Lil welcomed my partner and kids with open arms, love, and grace. Keeping tabs on us during phone calls with my Mom.
To say she’ll be missed is an understatement.
From West to East, we send our love.
I can only imagine the party the Clow sisters are having on the other side!! Swinging and sipping.

We feel blessed that we were always a part of Judy, Stewart, Michael and Jeremy’s lives. It was because of all those special occasions we had the pleasure of knowing Lillian. She made every occasion more special by being there. God bless Lillian and her family.

Love to all,
Anne and Cliff

My Mom, Bernice Bird and Lil were very good friends for years before Mom passed in 2010. They lived on the same floor in the condo. We had the opportunity to get to know Lil thru that friendship. Lil was indeed, a very special lady.
Please accept our sincere condolences.
