Obituary for Dr. Frank Maine

MAINE, Francis (Frank) William

It is with deep sadness that we announce that our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, Frank Maine, in his 82nd year, died at the Guelph General Hospital on Saturday, September 29, 2018. Frank leaves behind his wife, Mary-Eva, of 60 years this coming May, his sons Stephen (Suzanne), Shaun (Ellen), Shane (Kelly) and his daughter Elicia, and grandchildren Katherine, Julia, Chloe, Rhiannon, Bronwen and Fen and also, his sister Marguerite (Matt). He was predeceased by his son Michael and by his daughter Natasha.

Educated at Queen’s University, with a B.Sc. and M.Sc in Engineering Chemistry and at Churchill College, University of Cambridge with a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Frank spent most of his working years in plastics and composite materials in government, industries and universities. He developed new materials and processes and was involved in patenting some of his work and also commercializing it. This culminated in his pioneering work on oriented polymer composites.

Frank and Mary-Eva returned to Canada with a growing family after Frank’s studies in England, to work in Quebec City, Toronto and then Sarnia, before moving to Guelph. That is where they have lived busy and very involved lives all these years.

Frank was a Member of Parliament (1974-1979) where he served under former Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau and he was Parliamentary Secretary of Science and Technology, Public Works and Employment and Immigration. Later, he served on Guelph City Council as a councillor.

In recent years, he spent time with his hobbies of orchids and photography.

Friends are invited to meet with the family at the Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, Dublin Chapel, 252 Dublin St. N., Guelph, on Wednesday, October 3rd, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Rosary Church, 175 Emma St., Guelph, on Thursday, October 4th, 2018 at 10:30 a.m., where Frank was an active parishioner, involved with the Knights of Columbus. Donations in Frank’s memory may be made to the Knights of Columbus or to Holy Rosary Church. Cards are available at the funeral home (519-822-4731) and condolences may be sent to www.gilbertmacintyreandson.com

On the following day, the family will take Frank’s cremated body to be buried at Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Cemetery, Sarnia, Ontario, beside their children, Michael and Natasha. It was Frank and Mary-Eva’s faith, their dear friends and their family who got them through that difficult time and then, allowed them to be able to continue to lead their very productive lives.
