Lyn (Marilyn) Carson McVey,
MSc, B. Phys Ed., RNA, July 5, 1932- Mar 9, 2020
Lyn’s greatest joys in life were her children, Willa-Lyn Ferigo and her husband, Mike and James Gallinger and his wife, Laurie. She was Nani to her adored grandchildren, Brandon and Taylor Ferigo. Treasured Aunt to Carson (Donna), Cynthia (Keith), Margaret (Gord) and the late Robert (Lise). Lyn will be dearly missed by all of her family and friends including her “chain letter” women – a group of 6 friends from her University days that have been maintaining a chain letter for over 65 years. Sadly she will be the first to break the chain.
Lyn was a respected educator for most of her adult life. She was the Women’s Athletic Director at Ryerson University (formerly Ryerson Institute of Technology) from 1957-1967. At Ryerson she taught phys-ed to all first year female students, coached women’s sports including basketball, badminton and volleyball and was the first woman to coach a winning men’s badminton team . Lyn was inducted as a Builder into the Ryerson University Sports and Recreation Hall of Fame in 2007. The Lyn McVey MVP award is still handed out for Women’s basketball at Ryerson.
Lyn was also a former teacher in the School of Nursing at Georgian College and Conestoga Colleges in Guelph, Kitchener and Waterloo and later on became a Commissioner of the National Association of Career Colleges.
Lyn was a member of Trinity Church and sang in the choir for many years along with being an active life time member of Beta Sigma Phi. She was an avid golfer and former member of the Guelph Country Club and the former Owen Sound Golf and Country Club. Lyn spent time volunteering at the River Run, Arboretum Centre and at the Homewood.
In Lyn’s own words “I’ve had much fun since I have been here-my parting is in sorrow; This evening you may rest with ease-I won’t be back tomorrow”.
We would like to thank all of the wonderful staff and nurses at the Wellington Terrace, in Fergus. A special thank you to Nurse, Ryen Wightman for the attention, care and jokes he shared with Lyn.
Memorial visitation will be held at Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, Dublin Chapel, 252 Dublin St, N, Guelph, on Sunday, March 15, 2020 from 12-3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Wellington Terrace and the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. Donation cards are available at the funeral home (519-822-4731), or online at
