Obituary

WINSHIP, Oswald Leslie

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Les Winship on August 19, 2020 in the peaceful ambiance of Hospice Wellington. After 50 years as an electrician, Les retired to teach computer courses at the Evergreen Centre, volunteer at Habitat for Humanity, play golf and travel. He also devoted much time to painting with watercolours and drawing. In his large body of work, there was a calendar for the IBEW and a book of pen and ink drawings of Guelph. A much loved family man, Les leaves behind Sylvia, his wife of 65 years, daughter Susan (Gary), son Geoffrey (Janet) and daughter Linda (Michael), four grandchildren, three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place with a private family service and a memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice Wellington or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Online donations and condolences can be made at www.gilbertmacintyreandson.com.

We are so sorry to hear about Les' passing, Sylvia. He was such a fine man. When I think of him, what immediately comes to mind is his kindness and generosity of spirit. Both you and he made us feel so welcome when we moved to Cedar Street. Always ready with a smile or a helping hand. He knew a lot about the city's history and through that and his drawings, we gained a deeper appreciation of our new home. We proudly display one of his watercolors in our front entrance (Memory Garden Water lilies). I think him often when I look at it. Wishing you strength and comfort through memories and the love of those close to you. You are in our thoughts. The Bernier family

My condolences to you Sylvia, and to your family. You were together for so long I know there will be a hole in your life. Fill it with activities and with love from family and friends. If you want to talk give me a call. The Guild is meeting intermittently and only online this year. If you want info you can go to http://cegguelph.ca or contact Mavis Brown (president) or Catherine Schuler (newsletter) or me (though I'm not available this coming week.) I'm sure many members would be happy to hear from you. Stay well.

Dearest Sylvia, We are so sorry to hear of Les’ passing. We are holding you in our hearts, and miss you very much. Les was the most wonderful neighbour — funny, detail oriented, keeping your property so tidy it raised us all up to try to keep up. I adored his flower garden, especially lupines and the wisteria so lovingly trained across the garage. His gardening advice over the fence was so welcome (and needed!) and the annual ritual of cutting the shared hedge was always challenge. When the roofing company we had hired seemed to be cutting corners, Les parked his lawn chair right on your driveway and watched those guys while we were away at work. Sure enough there were deficiencies serious enough that the company actually replaced the whole thing by a different crew. His creativity and life long commitment to making art inspire us all. We loved hearing stories of your children and grand children and seeing the projects that you both created for them with your beautiful craftsmanship. We are so grateful for you and send our deepest sympathies to you and your family, Sylvia. Justine and Brady

Please accept my condolences, Sylvia,to you and your family. It was always my pleasure to sit and chat to Les all about Newcastle. We had many happy memories relived over the Evergreen dining room table. Sometimes you were with Les and i had the pleasure of saying hello to both of you. Les and my family go back to our days with Guelph Youth Soccer. I admired Les for his passion for art. I'm sure you will always have a part of Les through his paintings. Sincerely Mike and Dora Rooke
