WOOD, Shirley Marie - Shirley passed away at St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Guelph on Friday, January 3, 2020, in her 88th year. Loving wife of the late Norman (1988), and dear mother of Don and Norma (Robert) of Vancouver, and Leslie (Matthew) of Toronto. Predeceased by her parents, Roy and Eliza Lowry, brother Jim, sisters Thelma and Alice, and grandson Eric. Survived by her sister Myrtle Guthrie. Shirley will be sadly missed by her grandchildren Juma, Aaron, Scarlet and Joel, and great-grandson Niko, the light of her life. She was also loved by many nieces and nephews.

As a stay-at-home mom for several years, she instilled a love of language and reading in her children, and passed down her enjoyment in making puns, although no one could quite match her razor-sharp wit. She followed the rules in Scrabble rigorously, and if she did not achieve an individual score well above 300, it was not worth recording. Shirley also loved to trip the light fantastic at any opportunity.

Raised in Erin Township, where her culinary skills had their roots, Shirley could take an old leather boot and make it into prime rib. Her pastry was unrivaled, and if you were in her good books, you might get a coupon redeemable for one apple pie. Although generous with her recipes, she did not pass on any of her culinary secrets to anyone. What happened in the kitchen, stayed in the kitchen.

Over the last several years, the following people gave generously of their time in assisting Shirley: sister-in-law Gerry Evans, nephew Mike Gilliam, and adopted children Bob and Nancy Molto, and Mike Hollingshead. She also cherished her friends at the Red Chevron Club. At Norfolk Manor, where Shirley lived for the last eleven months, she received great warmth and care from the nurses and all of the staff.

Cremation has taken place. Interment of Shirley’s ashes at Woodlawn Cemetery will take place at a later date. As a celebration of Shirley’s life, there will be a party in the Spring, with details to come. Memorial contributions to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
