Passed away at Ridgeview Long Term Care, Stoney Creek, on Saturday, December 14, 2019. Sophia (nee Jopko) Schurter, in her 100th year, was the beloved wife of the late Michael Kenneth Schurter (April 2018) for over 67 years. She was the dear mother of Jane (Ted) Shelegy and Paul (Antoinette) Schurter. Sophia is survived by six grandchildren Jennifer (James) Vosburgh, Michael and Christy Shelegy, and Anthony, Lisa and Vanessa Schurter (Vince Piedimonte) and by one great-granddaughter Evelyn Vosburgh. Sophia is joining her husband Michael, and her parents Harry and Gregoria (nee Fel) Jopko.
Sophia was born in Stony Plain, Alberta, on August 2, 1920. She was the last surviving sibling of eight children. Sophia grew up on the family farm and then moved to Ontario. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in Toronto in 1943. Sophia served all of her patients with love and kindness. She left nursing behind to become a devoted wife and mother in Guelph. For many years, Sophia participated in CWL and other activities at the Church of Our Lady, Guelph.
A time of visitation and funeral service will be held at the Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home, 252 Dublin St. N., Guelph, on Friday, December 20, 2019 from 8:30 – 10 a.m., followed by a funeral service in the chapel at 10 a.m. Interment will take place at Marymount Cemetery, Guelph. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario would be appreciated by the family.
